Steve Campana

Steve Campana professor at the University of Iceland will deliver the concluding plenary talk of the Biology in Iceland 2015 conference.

His talk is titled Adventures in the Arctic: First steps towards a pan-Arctic conservation strategy for lake trout.

Lake trout are the most abundant freshwater fish in the Canadian Arctic, and are rapidly becoming as much of a target for recreational fishers in the relatively untouched Arctic as they are further south. However, there is virtually no assessment or management of catches, despite the suspicion that the thousands of lake populations are slow-growing and very sensitive to overfishing. Our expeditions to lakes across the Arctic produced thousands of lake trout, which were then aged with modern methods. The results are being used to develop a predictive model and Google Earth overlay which will allow the sustainable yield of lake trout in 500,000+ unstudied lakes to be accessed by simply pointing and clicking on any Canadian Arctic lake shown in Google Earth. But first we had to complete the Arctic expeditions. And not all went smoothly…

Íslenskt ágrip:

Blettasilungur er algengasti fiskurinn í ferksvatni á heimskautasvæði Kanada og hefur ásókn frístundaveiðimanna í hann, á hinu svo til ósnortna heimskauti, aukist til jafns við veiðar á suðlægari slóðum. Þrátt fyrir að menn telji að þeir hátt í þúsund stofnar sem þar er að finna séu hægvaxta og viðkvæmir fyrir ofveiðum er nánast ekkert stofnmat lagt á þá né reynt að stjórna veiðum. Þúsundir blettasilunga voru veiddir í leiðangri okkar yfir heimskautið og þeir aldursgreindir með nútíma aðferðum. Niðurstöðurnar eru nú nýttar til að hanna spálíkan ásamt Google Earth gagnalagi sem getur hjálpað til við sjálfbæra nýtingu blettasilungs í yfir 500 000 ókönnuðum vötnum sem hægt er að nálgast með einföldum músasmellum á þeim Kanadísku heimskauta vötnum sem hægt er að finna í Google Earth. Fyrst þurfti þó að klára heimskauta-leiðangurinn. Og þar gekk ekki allt smurt …
