The University of Oulu is one of the largest universities in Finland, located in the city of Oulu, northern Finland (65°N). The University of Oulu is an international science university which creates innovation for the future, well-being, and knowledge through multidisciplinary research and education. Our group at the Department of Ecology received funding (Academy of Finland) for project “Light-driven host-symbiont interactions under global warming induced host range shifts” for years 2014 – 2018. Within this project we offer almost three-year full-funded position for a successful a PhD student candidate. We seek for a:

Doctoral student in Ecology

with a background in plant ecophysiology. The research will focus on interactions between host tree seedlings and their root fungal symbionts under light quality manipulations related climate change and consequent range shifts. The work consists of field and lab measurements on plants and root fungi. Moreover, his/her tasks will be managing experimental sampling with younger students. The task will be performed in collaboration with Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE) (Jokioinen, Southern Finland, 60°N) and Kevo Subarctic Research Station (Northern Finland, 70°N), where the experimental sites exist. Majority of the work will be done in the University of Oulu.

The position is initially offered for 2 years and 10 months starting ASAP in 2015. After this, the group will apply for funding from external sources (foundations etc.) The salary will be based on the salary system for teaching and research staff in use at the University of Oulu. In addition, on the basis of personal work performance, up to 46.3 % of the job demands level can be paid.
