Peatlands of various types and conditions cover approximately 15-20% of Iceland’s vegetated surface. They support large breeding populations of birds, store vast amount of carbon and play an important role in water and nutrient cycling. To meet Iceland’s international climate change and biodiversity commitments, as well as to facilitate successful restoration and conservation, we need to improve our understanding of these ecosystems. The monitoring program Mýrgas was initiated in 2023. Data are collected on peatland greenhouse gas fluxes and related ecosystem factors representing, different land use, habitat type and soil type in South-West and East of Iceland with other parts of the island to be included in the future. Recently a long-term monitoring project Mýrland was initiated, with the aim to extrapolate these findings to Iceland’s broader peatland landscapes. Preliminary results show substantial spatial and temporal variability as well as the impact of land use, highlighting the complexity of these ecosystems.
