European storm-petrels (Hydrobates pelagicus) presumably breed on all islands in the Faroese archipelago. Despite a lack of census data, estimates have been made which locate the majority of the world population on these islands. Furthermore it has been claimed that Urðin, Nólsoy – a 4 km scree and bolder area – is the largest colony in the world. In 2012 a census was undertaken of the Urðin colony. This multi-year census is not yet complete, but effort and preliminary results are presented. On the island of Koltur European storm-petrels breed in man-made stonewalls, and inside stonewall houses. This has presented an opportunity to permanently monitor the activity of nests with the use of cameras. Thousands of hours of video have been captured showing nest attendance, feeding patterns and other behaviour.
