The Ocean Decade: The science we need for the ocean we want

The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 was launched in January 2021. The ‘Ocean Decade’, provides a framework for a wide range of stakeholders across the world to collaborate and work accross diciplines to address the challenges societies and ocean ecosystems face.
The Ocean Decade Vision: ‘The science we need for the ocean we want.’ The Ocean Decade Mission: ‘Transformative ocean science solutions for sustainable development, connecting people and our ocean.’ In this presentation our goal is to give the audience an overview of the Ocean Decade and how it is being implemented, the Ocean Decade actions, 10 Ocean Decade Challenges and how it all relates to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We will also talk about the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) that is in charge of coordinating the UN Ocean Decade, the current state of the IOC and Ocean Decade work carried out in Iceland, and opertunities and challenges.
