Aerobiology, the study of aerosolization, aerial transmission, and biological material deposition, encompasses a diverse range of investigations. This presentation focuses specifically on research concerning allergenic plant pollen. Why is the broader field of aerobiology, and more particularly the study of allergenic pollen, of such paramount importance? For three decades, the research on the diversity and concentration of airborne pollen in Iceland has yielded a wealth of valuable insights. This talk will summarise the findings from these extensive observations, offering the audience a comprehensive understanding of the significance of these studies, as well as a glimpse into the various pollen types present in the Icelandic atmosphere.
Beyond Icelandic vascular plants, do other sources contribute to the pollen content in the air? Are allergenic pollen in Iceland akin to those found in Europe? Why is so important to be able to forecast pollen levels and what is the rationale behind such forecasts? This presentation will address these and some more questions, shedding light on the broader implications of allergenic pollen studies in Iceland, both historically and in the context of future research plans.
