There are many claims for medical or drug-like benefits of natural ingredients in cosmetic products, so-called cosmeceuticals (cosm(etic) + (pharma)ceutic). Here we present an overview of our research using cell based assays to test some of the claims regarding wrinkle development and skin firmness on compounds with marine origin. We are currently using two cell lines with human origin, HT1080, a fibrosarcoma cell line and Detroit551, a fibroblast cell line from normal fetus tissue. These enable us to test the effect of test compounds on the activity of several matrix metalloproteases involved in extracellular matrix synthesis and remodeling of human skin. Additionally, we are interested in the amount of human collagen type 1 (main skin component – 70% of skin weight) using ELISA and zymography.
