Recently it has been more appreciated that to further our understanding of how biodiversity is generated and maintained in nature it is necessary to study the integrative role of ecological, evolutionary and developmental processes (ECO-EVO-DEVO). A fundamental observation in this context is that the environment plays a central role in both intra- and intergeneration processes of phenotypic and genetic changes, a recognition which has been greatly motivated by studies of phenotypic plasticity and of evolutionary processes in the form of genetic accommodation and genetic assimilation. Here, we will explore the power of ECO-EVO-DEVO dynamics to generate new knowledge. The role of the environment will be examined, both regarding how phenotypic diversity is realised within and among generations and how the environment may in turn be influenced by phenotypes. The field of ECO-EVO-DEVO provides a framework for greater integration and organizes concepts in a novel way for evolutionary theory.
